James Gordon Hanes (1916-1995) was a Winston-Salem manufacturer and North Carolina state senator. The collection includes papers accumulated by J. Gordon Hanes as member of the North Carolina Commission to Study the Statutes Relating to Visiting Speakers at State-Supported Educational Institutions (Speaker Ban Study Commission). Included are transcripts of testimony at public hearings held by the commission, August-September 1965; papers pertaining to the succeeding special session of the General Assembly; items concerned with subsequent regulations of the University of North Carolina Board of Trustees and a lawsuit contesting the regulations; and notes, speeches, and other related papers of Hanes.
